Ultra Low Emission Zone
On the 29th of August 2023, a substantial expansion of London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) is scheduled to take effect. This extension will encompass all the London boroughs that were previously included in the Low Emission Zone (LEZ), resulting in a significant impact on thousands of drivers.
To aid those London residents affected by the ULEZ expansion, the Mayor of London has introduced a new £110 million scrappage program. This financial assistance initiative is poised to provide substantial support to numerous vehicle owners. Nevertheless, we strongly encourage individuals to submit their applications promptly in order to secure the funding, or to explore alternative arrangements while there is ample time for preparation.
The expanded ULEZ will include Enfield, Redbridge, Havering, Barking & Dagenham, Bexley, Bromley, Croydon, Sutton, Merton, Wandsworth, Kingston Upon Thames, Richmond Upon Thames, Hounslow, Ealing, Hillingdon, Harrow, Brent and Barnet.
Charges and penalties
Failure to meet the emissions standards with your vehicle may result in a daily fee of £12.50. To ascertain whether your vehicle complies with the ULEZ emission standards, please utilize TfL’s vehicle checker.
The ULEZ penalty charges have been raised from £160 to £180, with the option of a 50% reduction if paid within 14 days. To determine if you qualify for exemptions, you can visit the TfL discounts and exemptions webpage.
New scrappage scheme funding
The newly established £110 million scrappage program is designed to offer grant payments to individuals looking to retire or retrofit their vehicles that fall short of meeting the emissions standards. This initiative aims to facilitate a transition to more environmentally friendly modes of transportation. Eligible participants have the option to receive a payment for scrapping their vehicle or a reduced payment combined with one or two TfL Annual Bus & Tram passes, which is of greater value than the payment itself.
Support through this program is exclusively available to eligible applicants whose vehicles fail to meet the ULEZ emissions standard. This includes London residents receiving certain low-income or disability benefits, qualifying micro-businesses (with up to 10 employees), sole traders, and registered charities based in London.
